Ottmar Hörl, a multidisciplinary German artist, is internationally recognized for his avant-garde style, a bit PopArt. His audacity has pushed him since the beginning to undertake gigantic and radical projects in new places with his sculptures, happenings (stagings) of serial sculptures, photographs or other conceptual objects. Its goal is to offer a type of art accessible to all and to democratize it using simple materials like PVC.
Based on the concept of "sculpture as an organizing principle" and the idea of multiplication and proliferation, he removes the elitism of classical art, through the reproduction, the multiplication of his works of art, this which earned him numerous awards. Also very involved in the world of Fine Arts, he is one of the founding members of the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts created in 1999, of which he became president in 2005.
He is also a founding member of the Fomalhaut group in 1985: design, art and architecture studio. There he collaborated with other architects on impressive designer constructions such as Living Room : a contemporary residence in the medieval center of Gelnhause in Germany.
Synonymous with bad taste, the garden gnome has often had a kitsch reputation.
It was in the 1980s that Ottmar Horl began to take an interest in this kitschy symbol of our elders' garden, but it was in 2005 that he democratized it and finalized its current design.
Over the years and exhibitions, Ottmar Hörl's dwarf has adopted new attitudes: hands in prayer (the dwarf Ben), hand greeting (the dwarf Welcome), blind, deaf or mute dwarf (the dwarves See Nothing, Hear Nothing or Say Nothing), hands fingers in V (the dwarf Victory).
Nicknamed Ben or Sponti, this traveling, provocative and rock'n'roll gnome has had incredible success since its creation in 2005. It was popularized by the influencer François Dequidt aka Pog (@pogforever on Instagram) who is keen on classic cars who adorns his cars with garden gnomes. Indoors or outdoors, it's the kind of object that will have an effect and will add a gently sassy touch to your decorating routine. Tested and approved!
