Hans Wegner

Hans Wegner est un designer danois né en 1914 et décédé en 2007. Grâce à son père, qui était maitre cordonnier, Wegner a vite été attiré par les métiers manuels ; c’est ainsi qu’il débuta à l’âge de 14 ans une formation pour devenir ébéniste. Wegner est particulièrement connu pour sa création « The Chair », devenue mobilier historique aux États-Unis grâce au président John Kennedy qui, souffrant de problème de dos, la choisit en 1960 pour le débat télévisé contre Richard Nixon. D’après les mots du magazine américain Interiors, cette chaise, publiée en couverture, était « la plus belle chaise du monde ». Cette découverte n’était pas seulement celle d’un designer, mais aussi la découverte du design danois.

Hans Wegner is a Swedish designer born in 1914 and died in 2017. Thanks to his father, who was a master shoemaker, Wegner was quickly attracted to manual trades; This is how he began training at the age of 14 to become a cabinetmaker, alongside Stahlberg, a great German craftsman.

Wegner is particularly known for his creation “The Chair”, which became a historic piece of furniture in the United States thanks to President John Kennedy who, suffering from a back problem, chose it in 1960 for the televised debate against Richard Nixon. According to the words of the American magazine Interiors, this chair, published on its cover, was “the most beautiful chair in the world”.

This discovery was not only that of a designer, but also the discovery of Danish design.
