Who owns mothers’ bodies?
For this issue n°83, MilK Magazine took an interest in the body. To the bodies of mothers, scrutinized, judged, exhibited, but also liberated. Between injunction and emancipation, he is today reinvested, and regains the power to decide what he wants to show. In this issue, it is also about the child's body, whose relationship to its image and self-esteem is built from a tender age. So, how can we help him know himself better?

The editorial by Sarah Berger, magazine editor-in-chief
“A mother's body is her child's first territory. The model Nami, on the cover of our issue, embodies this refuge for her daughter Solal, only 2 months old at the time of our photo shoot in their Parisian loft. The total fusion between these two beings reminds us that at this age, the baby still perceives his mother's body as an extension of his own.

The maternal body is, for the child, as much a nest as a delicacy, an armor as a haven of peace, an observation tower as a means of locomotion. It is also a landscape, one that can be seen in its full and simple nudity. The child contemplates its hollows and bumps, and gradually becomes aware, in mirror image, of his own appearance, laying the foundations of his relationship with his image.

In this issue, it is as much a question of the child's body as that of his mother. Scrutinized, touched, judged, the maternal body is too often understood as a public object. Besides, who owns the bodies of pregnant women? To the couple, to the family, to doctors, to society as a whole? An eminently political subject, among those theorized by the philosopher Camille Froidevaux-Metterie, who, in these pages, tells us about the woman's body as the first place of feminist struggle, at the time of the emergence of the body positive movement. Become one, finally. It’s redrawing the contours of one’s identity through a reinvested, chosen body, which has the power to decide what it wants to show.”
