Berger Stool by Charlotte Perriand for Cassina
Designed in 1953 and presented for the first time in 1955 at the Synthese des Arts exhibition in Tokyo, the 524 Berger stool is part of a series based on the reinterpretation of the local architecture of the Alps, a region so appreciated by Charlotte Perriand.
It is associated with the 523 Méribel stool.
These stools are both inspired by the mountains, one taking its name from the shepherds of the Alps who used this type of stool for milking, the other from the French town, which Perriand loved. These supplements are distinguished by the purity of their simple forms
and by their pragmatic aspect, expressed by the material and by the function for which they are intended. The turned seat is matched with stylized legs, both for the Berger Tabouret, a low variant with three hand-turned solid wood legs, and for the Méribel Tabouret, a high version with three angular cut-section legs. Produced by Cassina, they are the result of careful craftsmanship which honors the authenticity of the project. These little masterpieces can be used individually or in highly original compositions. The use of solid wood offers a pleasant feeling of softness, with the continuity of the grain between the top and the edge, while the depth of the surfaces draws infinite natural variations on each piece.
