Ronan Bouroullec, an internationally recognized French designer, practices drawing daily as a pure artistic activity, independent of his profession.
For Ronan Bouroullec, drawing is a relaxing, even meditative process, where he gives free rein to his intuition and creativity, without planning the shapes in advance. Thus, the shapes are not defined by a precise beginning or end, which can give rise to several interpretations.
Ronan Bouroullec considers drawing essential to his balance. The book Fièvre accompanies the exhibition “Daily Drawings”, the Hôtel des Arts TPM in Toulon. With nearly 300 works (drawings, bas-reliefs and notebooks) presented, he reveals a small, still little-known part of his creative talent. A tiny part compared to the thousands of drawings he all keeps, but rich enough to shed light on this very intimate facet of the personality of one of the most talented French designers of his generation.
Learn more about this designer
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are two French designer brothers. Of Breton origin, they finally settled in Paris “to work together. Their collaboration began in 1998. Ronan graduated from the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, while Erwan attended the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts de Cergy.
While the Bouroullec brothers' collaborative designs involve a rigorous and complex research and testing process, Ronan Bouroullec's personal work offers no interference, no blueprint.
Growing up in the countryside, Ronan Bouroullec began drawing as an escape, a source of pure pleasure, explaining: "...drawing became for me what we call in French a companion, a kind of friend."
Today, his drawings are instinctive rather than intellectualized, retaining a sense of whimsical naivety – and exuding freedom.
Ronan Bouroullec's drawings have been presented in numerous solo exhibitions including Giorgio Mastinu Fine Art (Venice, 2018), Galerie kreo, (Paris, 2019), Licht Gallery (Tokyo, 2021) and Casa Mutina (Milan, 2021-2022) - as well as group exhibitions such as “Objects of desire - Surrealism and design 1924-today”, (Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany, 2019; CaixaForum Barcelona, Spain, 2020; CaixaForum Madrid, Spain, 2020- 2021) and 'An uncertain spring, invitation to 40 creators', (Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, 2021).
His drawings are found in several major private and international collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago. Ronan Bouroullec is represented by Galerie kreo, in Paris and London.
