The Action Office was the world's first open-plan office system and the result of over three years of research by the Herman Miller Research Corporation under the direction of Robert Propst.

Extensive studies on human behavior in the office, environmental influences on productivity, health, and enthusiasm at work led Propst to propose a furniture system that challenged the traditional hierarchical office organization with an open and less rigid structure.

Desks of varying heights were intended to encourage alternating between sitting and standing to promote concentration and creativity, thereby increasing efficiency.

Desks with a closable rolltop allow unfinished work to be left on the desk in the evening, ready to be resumed the next morning without delay.

The Action Office, whose design originated from George Nelson's office, received the Alcoa Industrial Design Award in 1965.
