HAY fabrics & materials

At HAY, every upholstered seat can be ordered in the fabric or leather of your choice. The price is determined by the covering's price group, not its color: within a group, all colors are available at no extra charge. This page brings together the 44 qualities from the 2026 HAY price list and all 1,097 of their colors, including composition, abrasion resistance, and care instructions.

Ordering a HAY covering

1. Choose the price groupOn the product page, the "Price category" menu sets the piece's price. Each price group above lists the qualities it contains.
2. Choose the quality and colorOpen a quality to read its composition, resistance, and colors. The color has no impact on the price.
3. Specify when orderingIndicate "quality name + color code" in the order comments. We will confirm by email before production begins.

Not sure about a material? Send us your model and intended use: we will tell you what holds up, what develops a patina, and what we don't recommend — and we will prepare samples for you to see.

Understanding the spec sheets

The Martindale measures abrasion resistance: a wool disc rubs the fabric as it rotates, and we count the cycles until two threads break (ISO 12947 standard). The higher the number, the better the fabric withstands daily wear — jeans, zippers, claws.

< 30,000Occasional use
30 to 50,000Domestic use
50 to 100,000Heavy use
≥ 100,000Heavy-duty use

Lightfastness (ISO 105-B02) ranges from 1 to 8: 5 is a good level for indoor seating, 6 and above is suitable near a floor-to-ceiling window. Pilling is rated from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best.

Wool, plant fiber, or synthetic? Wool is elastic: it recovers its shape, breathes, resists dirt, and ages well. Cotton and linen have the softest hand and the most matte appearance, but they mark and wrinkle more. Technical polyesters and acrylics withstand abrasion, light, and cleaning, at the cost of a less natural feel.

Aniline or pigmented leather? Aniline leather is dyed through without a covering layer: it shows its grain, its life marks, and develops a patina. Pigmented or corrected leather has a uniform surface finish, making it easier to live with and clean, but less lively.

The displayed color is measured, not declared. The categorization by color family on this page is calculated for each sample photograph, which avoids vocabulary surprises from one manufacturer to another. It does not replace having a sample in hand.

What applies to what

  • The numbering on this page is from the 2026 HAY price list, the same as in the "Price category" menu on our product pages. The public HAY brochure from December 2024 uses a scale of 1 to 6 that no longer corresponds to current prices: do not rely on it for comparison.
  • Color has no impact on price. Two chairs of the same model, in two colors from the same group, are the same price.
  • Not all fabrics are suitable for all models. Pieces with exposed seams or fine padding exclude the thickest fabrics; we verify this with HAY before launching the order.
  • Sense, Nevada, and Grano leathers are aniline leathers. They show their grain and life marks, and develop a patina. Sierra leather, which is pigmented, offers a more regular and easier-to-maintain surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the color change the price?
No. At HAY, the covering's price group sets the price of the piece. Within the same price group, all qualities and their colors are at the same rate.
How do I specify the fabric and color when ordering?
Choose the price group in the "Price category" menu on the product page, then indicate "quality name + color code" in the order comments — for example "Atlas 111". We confirm availability with the manufacturer before starting production.
What does the Martindale number mean?
It is the standardized measurement of abrasion resistance (ISO 12947): a wool disc rubs the fabric as it rotates, and we count the cycles until two threads break. Under 30,000 cycles, the fabric is suitable for occasional use; from 30,000 to 50,000, for current domestic use; from 50,000 to 100,000, for heavy use; beyond 100,000, for heavy-duty use and public spaces. 16 qualities on this page exceed 100,000 cycles.
Which fabric should I choose with children or pets?
Look at three numbers: Martindale (aim for at least 50,000 cycles), pilling (4 or 5), and lightfastness (5 minimum, 6 near a window). Tightly woven wools and technical polyesters hold up better against claws and cleaning than cottons and linens, which are softer but more sensitive to stains.
Are the displayed colors accurate?
No, and no screen is: calibration, ambient light, and the texture of the material change the perception of a hue. The visuals on this page are for comparison and pre-selection. Before ordering, contact us to see the samples.
What is the production lead time?
Expect 8 to 12 weeks: each piece is upholstered to order.
