&Tradition fabrics & materials

At &Tradition, every upholstered piece can be ordered in the covering of your choice. The fabric, leather, or sheepskin price group determines the price; the color can be chosen freely within the group, at no extra cost. This page gathers the 38 qualities from the &Tradition price list and their 382 colors, including composition, abrasion resistance, country of origin, and certifications.

Ordering an &Tradition covering

1. Choose the price groupOn the product page, the "Fabric group" menu sets the price of the piece. Each price group above lists the qualities it contains.
2. Choose the quality and colorOpen a quality to read its composition, resistance, and colors. The color does not affect the price.
3. Specify when orderingIndicate "quality name + color code" in the order comments. We will confirm by email before production begins.

Unsure about a material? Send us your model and usage: we will tell you what lasts, what patinas, and what we do not recommend — and we will prepare the samples for you to see.

Understanding the data sheets

The Martindale measures abrasion resistance: a wool disc rubs the fabric while rotating, and the rotations are counted until two threads break (ISO 12947 standard). The higher the number, the better the fabric withstands daily wear — jeans, zippers, claws.

< 30,000Occasional use
30 to 50,000Domestic use
50 to 100,000Heavy use
≥ 100,000Intensive use

Lightfastness (ISO 105-B02) ranges from 1 to 8: 5 is a good level for indoor seating, 6 and above is suitable near a bay window. Pilling is rated from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best.

Wool, plant fiber, or synthetic? Wool is elastic: it returns to its shape, breathes, resists dirt, and ages well. Cotton and linen have the softest feel and the most matte look, but they mark and wrinkle more. Technical polyesters and acrylics handle abrasion, light, and cleaning well, at the cost of a less natural feel.

Aniline or pigmented leather? Aniline leather is dyed through without a top coating: it shows its grain, signs of life, and patinas. Pigmented or corrected leather receives a uniform surface finish, making it easier to live with and clean, but less lively.

The displayed color is measured, not declared. The color family classification on this page is calculated for each sample photograph, which avoids vocabulary surprises between manufacturers. It does not replace having a physical sample in hand.

What applies to what

  • The color does not change the price. Only the group counts: within a group, all qualities and their colors are at the same price.
  • Sheepskins (Sheepskin Classic, Standard, and Longwool) form their own group and can only be ordered for the intended models — Little Petra, Pavilion, Fly, among others.
  • "COM" means Customer's Own Material. &Tradition accepts your own fabric on some upholstered pieces; the required yardage and the manufacturer's approval must be confirmed with us before ordering.
  • "Crib 5" versions of the same fabric (Asator, Beda, Cifrado, Mylla) are the variants treated for the British fire standard BS 5852 Crib 5. Same design, same feel, contract use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the color change the price?
No. At &Tradition, the covering's price group sets the price of the piece. Within the same price group, all qualities and their colors are at the same rate.
How do I specify the fabric and color when ordering?
Choose the price group in the "Fabric group" menu on the product page, then indicate "quality name + color code" in the order comments — for example, "Grain 60301". We confirm availability with the manufacturer before starting production.
What does the Martindale number mean?
It is the standardized measurement of abrasion resistance (ISO 12947): a wool disc rubs the fabric while rotating, and the rotations are counted until two threads break. Below 30,000 cycles, the fabric is suitable for occasional use; from 30,000 to 50,000 for standard domestic use; from 50,000 to 100,000 for heavy use; above 100,000 for intensive use and public spaces. 10 qualities on this page exceed 100,000 cycles.
Which fabric should I choose with children or pets?
Look at three numbers: Martindale (aim for at least 50,000 cycles), pilling (4 or 5), and lightfastness (5 minimum, 6 near a bay window). Tight-knit wools and technical polyesters withstand claws and cleaning better than cottons and linens, which are softer but more stain-sensitive.
Are the displayed colors accurate?
No, and no screen is: calibration, ambient light, and material grain change the perception of a shade. The visuals on this page are for comparison and pre-selection. Before ordering, contact us to see the samples.
What is the production lead time?
Each piece is upholstered to order. The indicative lead time is displayed on each product page; we confirm it in writing upon ordering.
Can I have it upholstered in my own fabric?
Yes, on a selection of upholstered items: this is the "COM" option, for Customer's Own Material. The required yardage and the manufacturer's approval must be confirmed with us before ordering.
