Zanotta fabrics & materials

At Zanotta, the upholstery category determines the price; the color can be chosen freely within that category at no extra cost. This page brings together the 37 qualities from the 2026 Zanotta catalog and their 422 colorways, along with their codes — please provide this code when ordering. Each piece is made to order in Italy.

Ordering Zanotta upholstery

1. Choose the categoryOn the product page, the "Category" menu sets the price of the piece. Each category above lists the qualities it contains.
2. Choose the quality and colorOpen a quality to read its composition, durability, and colors. The color has no impact on the price.
3. Specify it at checkoutIndicate "quality name + color code" in the order notes. We will confirm by email before manufacturing begins.

Not sure about a material? Send us your model and intended use: we will tell you what is durable, what develops a patina, and what we do not recommend — and we will prepare samples for you to see.

Understanding the specifications

The Martindale measures resistance to abrasion: a wool disc rubs against the fabric as it rotates, and the number of cycles is counted until two threads break (ISO 12947 standard). The higher the number, the more the fabric can withstand daily wear and tear — jeans, zippers, claws.

< 30,000Occasional use
30 to 50,000Domestic use
50 to 100,000Heavy use
≥ 100,000Intensive use

Color fastness to light (ISO 105-B02) ranges from 1 to 8: 5 is a good level for indoor seating; 6 and above is suitable for use near a floor-to-ceiling window. Pilling is rated from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best.

Wool, plant fiber, or synthetic? Wool is elastic: it keeps its shape, breathes, resists dirt, and ages well. Cotton and linen have the softest hand and the most matte appearance, but they mark and wrinkle more easily. Technical polyesters and acrylics withstand abrasion, light, and cleaning, at the cost of a less natural feel.

Aniline or pigmented leather? Aniline leather is dyed through without a covering layer: it reveals its grain, its life marks, and develops a patina. Pigmented or corrected leather receives a uniform surface finish, making it easier to live with and clean, but less organic.

The displayed color is measured, not declared. The sorting by color family on this page is calculated based on each sample photograph, avoiding vocabulary surprises between editors. It does not replace having an actual sample in hand.

What applies to what

  • Customer’s own material (COM) is accepted on most upholstered items and is charged at Category 20 pricing. The necessary yardage is indicated in the pricing for each model and can be confirmed with us.
  • The Sacco pouf is not chosen by category: it is available in Vip (outdoor), Tux (indoor), and leather, with their own specific pricing.
  • The Bumper sofa is only available in fabric, categories 20, 30, and 40 — not in leather.
  • Replacement covers are available for most removable upholstery, in the same category as the original, upon request.
  • For outdoors, only Vip, Talasso, and pieces specifically designed for outside use — Allunaggio, Teti, Zeus, the Sacco Vip — are suitable.
  • Saddle leather (Cuoio, category 95) is reserved for specific pieces — Tonietta, Lama, Comacina — and is not interchangeable with Nappa leather.
  • Structure finishes (wood, lacquers, stone, glass, metal) are not selected by color but by piece: each model has its own specific list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the color change the price?
No. At Zanotta, it is the upholstery category that determines the price of the piece. Within the same category, all qualities and all their colors are at the same price.
How do I specify the fabric and color when ordering?
Choose the category in the "Category" menu on the product page, then indicate "quality name + color code" in the order comments — for example, "Vale 24801". We confirm availability with the manufacturer before starting production.
What does the Martindale number mean?
It is the standardized measurement for abrasion resistance (ISO 12947): a wool disc rubs the fabric in a circular motion, and cycles are counted until two threads break. Under 30,000 cycles, the fabric is suitable for occasional use; from 30,000 to 50,000, for standard domestic use; from 50,000 to 100,000, for heavy use; above 100,000, for intensive use in public spaces. Zanotta only publishes this figure for some of its qualities; if it is missing from a product page, it is because the manufacturer does not provide it.
Which fabric should I choose for children or pets?
Look at three numbers: the Martindale (aim for at least 50,000 cycles), pilling (4 or 5), and color fastness to light (5 minimum, 6 near a window). Tightly woven wools and technical polyesters resist claws and cleaning better than cottons and linens, which are softer but more prone to staining.
Are the displayed colors accurate?
No, and no screen is: calibration, ambient light, and the grain of the material change the perception of a shade. The visuals on this page are for comparison and pre-selection. Before ordering, contact us to see samples.
What is the production lead time?
Each piece is upholstered to order in Italy. The indicative lead time is displayed on each product page; we will confirm this in writing upon ordering.
Can I have a piece upholstered in my own fabric?
Yes, on most upholstered furniture: the "Customer’s own material" option is charged at the Category 20 price. The necessary yardage is indicated in the pricing for each model and can be confirmed with us.
Are there any outdoor upholstery options?
Yes: Vip, Talasso. They are only suitable for models designed to remain outdoors; the other qualities on this page are intended for indoor use.
