Designer, comfortable, and iconic.
The Eames Lounge Chair and its footstool, known respectively as the Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671), were released in 1956. This chair was the first item designed by the couple for mass-market production.
The Eameses designed it with the desire to give it "the warm, receptive look of a well-used first-baseman's mitt."
Originally manufactured with a molded rosewood plywood frame, polished and finished with thick leather cushions padded with feathers, with both pieces mounted on a chrome base, this chair suggests a modern American interpretation of the traditional European club chair.
The Lounge Chair by Charles & Ray Eames is a design bestseller, with more than 6 million units sold.
This design icon is even part of the permanent collection at the MoMA in New York.
There are two official editions: one American by Herman Miller, and the other European by Vitra.
The two editions are distinguished by differences in assembly.
Today, the Lounge Chair is still in production by Vitra and Herman Miller, but it differs from the original model: the rear seat cutout is open, and the attachment hardware for the backrest and armrests has changed.
