Stylish, comfortable, and iconic.The Eames Lounge Chair and its footstool, officially designated as the Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671), were first marketed in 1956. This chair was the first item intended for mass production designed by the couple.
The Eameses designed it with the intention of giving it “the warm receptive look of a well-used first-base baseball mitt.”
Originally manufactured with a molded, polished rosewood plywood shell, upholstered with thick, feather-filled leather cushions, and mounted on chrome bases, this chair suggests a modern American interpretation of the traditional European Club chair.
The Charles & Ray Eames Lounge Chair is a design bestseller, with over 6 million units sold.
This design icon is part of the permanent collection at the MoMa in New York.
There are two official editions: the American version by Herman Miller and the European version by Vitra.
The two editions are distinguished by differences in assembly.
Today, the Lounge Chair is still in production by Vitra and Herman Miller, but it differs from the original model: the rear seat cutout is open, and the mounting hardware for the backrest and armrests has changed.
