FDB, or Danish design made for everyone
The J-series does not come from a gallery: it comes from FDB, the Danish consumer cooperative that opened its furniture workshop in 1933. Børge Mogensen took over as director in 1942. HAY summarizes the firm's agenda: "to link industrial production with architectural furniture design," for "a simple, elegant and practical design intended for mass consumption." This is cooperative furniture, designed for mass production and affordable sale: and it has become a classic.
The design
The J-series cushion is not attributed to any single designer, and it could not be: it adapts to the five chairs J41, J42, J77, J104, and J110, which do not have the same creator. HAY attributes the J41 and J42 to Børge Mogensen, and our catalog lists Folke Pålsson and Jørgen Bækmark for other models in the series. The cushion itself is produced by HAY without an author's name: its product page bears no credit.
