“HAY’s reissue of Børge Mogensen’s J42 chair clearly reflects his design philosophy. Precise proportions and simple horizontal and vertical lines create a curved spindle back and angular armrests.”: HAY
The J42 is the armchair version of the series: wider and taller, it is equally well-suited for use at the head of a table or at a desk.
Finishes
Two wood types: beech, which is lighter and more economical, and oak. The lacquered finishes are water-based lacquers—HAY specifies water-based lacquered on its product sheets—applied to the beech; the oak comes oiled, dark oiled, or lacquered. The price difference between the variants is due to the wood type, not the color.
FDB, or Danish design for everyone
The J-series did not come from a gallery: it came from FDB, the Danish consumer cooperative that opened its furniture workshop in 1933. Børge Mogensen took over as director in 1942. HAY summarizes the firm's program: “linking industrial production with architect-designed furniture,” for “simple, elegant, and practical design intended for mass consumption.” It is cooperative furniture, designed to be mass-produced and sold at an affordable price: and it has become a classic.
