Maria Sánchez was born in 1954 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A graduate of the National University of Cuyo, she later studied under Hans Hollein and Carl Auböck at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna. She worked for fifteen years in Italy, then in the United States, before co-founding O2 International Ecodesign and working as a strategic design consultant and researcher. After meeting Ettore Sottsass in 1985, she joined the Memphis group, for which she designed Squash, a hand-painted ceramic bowl made of three elements.
