Konstantin Grcic

Konstantin Grcic first learned woodworking before he began designing objects, and it shows: his lighting fixtures are constructed, almost tool-like, and never decorative. He opened his studio in Munich in 1991. His Mayday utility lamps and his Noctambule system for Flos are in the catalog, alongside the Nocturne wall and floor lamps.

Learn more about Konstantin Grcic

He first trained in cabinetmaking at the John Makepeace School for Craftsmen in Wood in Dorset, then studied industrial design at the Royal College of Art in London. He opened his studio in Munich in 1991 and currently works from Berlin.

The Vitra Design Museum dedicated a monographic exhibition to him in 2014. His pieces are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The Mayday lamp, a workshop light transformed into a domestic object, perfectly encapsulates his approach of prioritizing function over image.
