The Barro serving bowl features "the rolled edge, soft touch and balanced proportions" of the series, according to HAY, and comes in two sizes: Ø 21 cm and Ø 26 cm. It is "available in a natural or high-gloss glaze, or with a hand-painted stripe pattern."
The bowls are "jiggered in a handmade mould," then glazed after an initial firing. The large size serves as a salad bowl; the small size as a bowl for two or a serving dish.
Sizes and colours
2 sizes, Small (Ø 21 cm), Large (Ø 26 cm), and 4 colours: natural terracotta with stripes, off-white, pistachio, green. Not all combinations are available: the menu above only offers those produced by HAY. Each colour has its own visual in the gallery.
Portuguese terracotta
Barro means "red clay" in Portuguese. HAY explains that the series is "made from locally sourced red clay," extracted "near the factory in Portugal," and shaped "using production processes closely guided by the human hand": handmade moulds, pressing, hand-trimmed edges, and then glazing after an initial firing. The pitcher and butter dish are cast; the stripes are hand-painted.
The terracotta is glazed, either in its natural tone or in glossy colours "selected and calibrated to be combined infinitely": not all pieces exist in all colours, which is intentional. HAY specifies "minimal water absorption and good impact resistance," and that all Barro pieces are dishwasher, microwave, oven and freezer safe.
