Designed for the MoMA “Low-Cost Furniture Design” competition in New York in 1950, the DSW is the result of the Eames couple’s research into fiberglass molding, previously reserved for aeronautics. Its one-piece shell, adapted to human anatomy, revolutionized the furniture industry.
A 20th-century icon, the DSW (Dining Side chair Wood) has earned its place in history.
It was mass-produced starting in 1950 in the United States by the manufacturer Herman Miller. It marked the beginning of “mass design.”
The first Eames chairs from 1950, distributed by the American company Herman Miller, were produced by Zenith Plastics in Gardena, California.
After 1953, the manufacturer changed factories several times, but production remained in the U.S. In Europe, the rights to the DSW were acquired by Vitra.
Lightweight, versatile, easy to maintain, available in multiple colors, and mass-produced, the Eames DSW chair has conquered interiors worldwide and is now exhibited in prestigious modern art museum collections.
Versatile, the DSW chair can be found in offices as well as private homes.
Eames chairs were subsequently developed into numerous models: RAR rocking chair, DAW armchair with wooden base, DAR armchair with Eiffel base, etc.
