Elio Martinelli is an internationally recognized 20th century Italian designer. After his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Florence, he designed his first models for his father's lamp manufacturing company. Then he opened a studio and became a set designer. This profession allows him to express his creativity while giving meaning to his objects. He focuses on the interior design of restaurants, hotels and bars.

He gradually specialized in the production of lamps and in 1950 developed his lighting company, Martinelli Luce. He quickly acquired prizes and awards first in Italy and then throughout the world. Some of his creations are permanent works in museums in New York, Philadelphia and Montreal.
The designer's creations, such as the Serpente, 2764, 660, Panthos and Penombra lamps, are iconic pieces of 20th century design. Throughout his life, he was inspired by simple geometric shapes and remained keen on technological innovations.

The Serpente floor lamp, in uniform white, represents a snake whose tail wraps around its base. It features a rotating arm that, when turned, shows a snake ready to attack.

Elio Martinelli's creations have become a symbol of modern Italian design thanks to their futuristic side. The lighting fixtures were always made of innovative materials for the time, such as methacrylate, a type of thermoplastic resin.
