Palissade Low Lounge Chair by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec

The Palissade Cantilever range takes the symmetrical geometry of the original collection and modifies the base: the frame rests on a continuous sled rather than four legs. The seat is thus supported in a cantilevered fashion, with no support under the seat itself. This has two concrete consequences. The silhouette becomes lighter: the void under the seat makes it appear as though it is resting on nothing. And above all, the frame is active: the steel flexes slightly under weight, providing a flexible seat with a spring effect that a four-legged base cannot offer. The seat and backrest remain made of spaced-out flat slats, which allow rainwater to drain and air to circulate. This is the lounge version: the seat lowers and moves back, the depth increases to 80 cm, and the backrest reclines. On a seat where one settles for a long time, the flexibility of the cantilever is much more noticeable than on a dining chair. It is available in powder-coated steel, a furnace-cured powder paint that forms a hard, opaque layer, and hot-dip galvanized steel, dipped in a bath of molten zinc: this finish is not painted, it develops a patina, and it is the one that holds up best in salty atmospheres.
