The Wire Chair, designed by Harry Bertoia for Knoll, is an iconic work of modern design. Created in 1952, this innovative piece is composed of a steel wire mesh structure supported by slender metal legs. The original manual manufacturing process involved each wire being carefully bent by hand before being welded and chrome-plated, highlighting Bertoia's artisanal approach to design.
About the designer Harry Bertoia:
Harry Bertoia, born in Italy, moved to and studied art and design in the United States. After working on the famous Eames chairs, he created a collection of woven steel wire seating for Knoll, of which the Diamond chair is one of the most recognized. Bertoia's creations, notably the "Diamond chair," the "Bird chair," and the "Barstool chair," revolutionized modern design. Following the meteoric success of his chairs at Knoll, he devoted himself to sculpture, exploring the relationship between metal and sound through his "Sonambient" sounding sculptures.
