The Barro butter dish "consists of a small plate and a matching lid," HAY describes. It is cast from terracotta; the butter dish, pitcher, and candle holder in the series are "the result of a casting process," then glazed.
Four glossy glazes: off-white, pink, dark blue, and burgundy. The bell sits on the plate without a mechanism; the butter is kept cool in the refrigerator and served in the butter dish.
Colors
4 colors: off-white, pink, dark blue, burgundy. Each color has its own visual in the gallery above.
Portuguese terracotta
Barro means "red clay" in Portuguese. HAY explains that the series is "made from locally sourced red clay," extracted "near the factory in Portugal," and shaped "through production processes closely monitored by human hands": handmade molds, pressing, hand-trimmed edges, then glazing after an initial firing. The pitcher and butter dish are cast; the stripes are hand-painted.
The terracotta is glazed, either in its natural tone or in glossy colors "selected and calibrated to be combined infinitely": not all pieces exist in all colors, by design. HAY notes "minimal water absorption and good impact resistance," and that all Barro pieces are dishwasher, microwave, oven, and freezer safe.
