“Designed by Portuguese designer Rui Pereira, the Barro plate is part of a tableware collection that brings the warmth and beautiful simplicity of terracotta to the table,” writes HAY. Two diameters: 18 cm, the dessert or bread plate, and 24 cm, the dinner plate. Each item is a set of two plates.
The rolled edge is the common thread of the series. Rui Pereira explains it as follows: “its softness to the touch and its proportions relate to the fingertips, to offer a pleasant interaction with the hand.” The plate is glazed in glossy colors, which mix and match from one piece to another.
Sizes and colors
2 sizes, Ø 18 cm, Ø 24 cm, and 6 colors: off-white, pink, pistachio, green, dark blue, burgundy. Not all combinations exist: the menu above only offers those that HAY manufactures. Each color has its own visual in the gallery.
Portuguese terracotta
Barro means “red clay” in Portuguese. HAY explains that the series is “made from locally sourced red clay,” extracted “near the factory in Portugal,” and shaped “using production processes closely guided by the human hand”: handmade molds, pressing, hand-trimmed edges, and then glazing after an initial firing. The pitcher and butter dish are cast; the stripes are hand-painted.
The terracotta is glazed, either in its natural tone or in glossy colors “selected and calibrated to be combined infinitely”: not all pieces exist in all colors, and this is intentional. HAY specifies “minimal water absorption and good impact resistance,” and that all Barro pieces are dishwasher, microwave, oven, and freezer safe.
