Are you in the line of fire? Do you feel targeted?
This exhibition is an "opening game" (Ottmar Hörl), in which gnome-like comrades use their little Berettas to aim at their neighbors and the spectator, because attack is the best form of defense. Especially for those of small stature.
In this exhibition, Ottmar Hörl shows how the way we treat one another has changed in our society.
The end of understanding in encounters and in the treatment of "the other" seems to have been reached. Instead, small-minded, self-centered individuals dominate and stoke fears. And preferably in an anonymous and unrecognized way.
Is our democracy already in checkmate, having lost its royal dignity to small, blindly rampaging pawns?
What does it say about our present when it is questioned in the mirror of an exhibition in this way?
And what about us, the spectators?
The design
Ottmar Hörl, a multidisciplinary German artist, is internationally recognized for his avant-garde style and his boldness in undertaking colossal projects. Sculptures, series of sculptural installations, photographs, and conceptual objects: his goal is to offer a type of art accessible to everyone, notably by democratizing sculpture by exhibiting gigantic and radical projects in public spaces.
Today, it is his Ben garden gnome, presented in Cologne for the first time in 2005, that contributes to his great fame: his installations are regularly exhibited in European capitals.
Keen on the democratization of art, he uses simple materials like PVC. Highly involved in the world of Fine Arts, he was one of the founding members of the Nuremberg Academy in 1999, of which he became president in 2005.
He has been awarded numerous prizes for his great creativity and his radical, offensive vision of promoting the democratization of sculpture.
He is also a founding member of the Fomalhaut group, established in 1985: a design, art, and architecture studio where he contributed to the design of impressive pieces in collaboration with architects, such as Living Room: a contemporary residence in the medieval center of Gelnhausen in Germany.
