“HAY’s re-edition of Børge Mogensen’s J41 chair features a slightly inclined backrest and widely spaced spindles, creating an open, timeless design. Crafted from solid wood, it combines natural warmth and comfort with durability.” : HAY
The J41 is the most minimalist model in the series: it is an occasional chair, without armrests, that slides under a table and can be stored against a wall.
Finishes
Two wood types: beech, which is lighter and more affordable, and oak. The lacquered finishes are water-based lacquers: HAY specifies water-based lacquered on its product sheets; these are applied to the beech, while the oak is available oiled, dark-oiled, or lacquered. The price difference between versions is due to the wood species, not the color.
FDB, or Danish design made for everyone
The J-series does not come from a gallery: it comes from FDB, the Danish consumer cooperative, which opened its furniture workshop in 1933. Børge Mogensen took over as head in 1942. HAY summarizes the company’s program: “to link industrial production with architectural furniture design,” for “a simple, elegant and practical design intended for mass consumption.” This is cooperative furniture, designed to be mass-produced and sold affordably: and it has become a classic.
