HAY presents the AAC 27 as offering the series' "functional simplicity and modern aesthetic," "tempered by the softness and warmth of the upholstered shell," on the same four-legged steel base. This is the most detailed product sheet in this batch: eighteen upholstery options, in standard or quilted finishes.

The upholstered shell, and what the textiles are

The shell is the same as on the non-upholstered models—a molded recycled polypropylene, according to HAY’s product sheet—but here it is covered across its entire surface. Foam is applied to the shell and then covered in the chosen upholstery: the feel is softer and noise is better dampened in busy rooms. In return, upholstery must be cleaned by dabbing rather than with a spray.

The upholstery options offered here: Sense, HAY’s aniline leather dyed through to the core: it shows the grain and develops a patina with use; Hallingdal 65, a Kvadrat wool blend (70% wool, 30% viscose), the company’s classic, highly durable fabric; Bolgheri, a HAY fabric with a rich blend (viscose, wool, polyamide, silk, linen); Remix 3, a Kvadrat heathered wool (92% wool, 8% nylon); Linara, a Romo cotton-linen blend (63% / 37%) with a matte look; Turf, a HAY mixed fabric (polyester, wool, acrylic, cotton). The variants known as quilted (what HAY calls "quilted") feature topstitching that compartments the padding: the stuffing does not shift over time, and the relief breaks up the uniform surface.

The base: powder-coated steel tube

The base is made of bent steel tubing, powder-coated in black: an oven-baked powder that creates a thick, matte layer, more resistant to impacts than liquid paint. HAY offers this model in other steel finishes; only black is available here. Clean with soapy water, without abrasives.
