HAY presents the AAC 227 as "the fusion of the clean aesthetic of the four-legged steel frame and the softness of the upholstered shell." It shares the same dimensions and design as the AAC 226, including the low armrests, and is available in standard or quilted upholstery.
The upholstered shell, and what the textiles are
The shell is the same as the one on the non-upholstered models—a molded recycled polypropylene, as stated in the HAY product sheet—but here it is covered over its entire surface. Foam is applied to the shell and then covered with the chosen upholstery: the feel is softer and sound is better dampened in high-traffic rooms. In return, upholstery must be cleaned by dabbing, not with a spray.
The upholstery options offered here: Hallingdal 65, a Kvadrat wool (70% wool, 30% viscose), the company's classic, which is highly durable; Sense, HAY's aniline-dyed leather: it reveals the grain and develops a patina over time; Turf, a blended HAY fabric (polyester, wool, acrylic, cotton); Remix 3, a Kvadrat mélange wool (92% wool, 8% nylon); Linara, a Romo cotton-linen blend fabric (63%/37%) with a matte look; Bolgheri, a rich-blend HAY fabric (viscose, wool, polyamide, silk, linen). The so-called quilted variants—HAY uses the term "quilted"—feature stitching that compartments the padding, ensuring the cushioning does not shift over time, while the relief breaks up the solid surface.
The base: powder-coated steel tube
The base is made of bent steel tubing with a black powder-coated finish: a baked-on powder that creates a thick, matte layer, which is more impact-resistant than liquid paint. HAY offers this model in other steel finishes; only black is offered here. Clean with soapy water, without abrasives.
