Book 100 Hotel Sketches - Daniel Arsham

English edition
16.8 x 24 cm (hardback)
216 pages

During his travels to world exhibitions, Daniel Arsham collected 100 drawings that he made over several years. He considers drawing to be his “first love”, a passion that he has nourished since childhood with an assiduous practice of sketching since the age of nine.
Drawings, for him, were first a tool for planning his works of art. Currently, they represent an overflowing source of inspiration for his massive installations and the exploration of new materials.

As he traveled, Daniel Arsham integrated stationery from the hotels where he stayed into his drawing routine. Fascinated by the letterhead of historic establishments, he mixes image and text to juxtapose past and present, a recurrence in his work.

This collection presents 100 of his hotel sketches, reflecting both his travels and the evolution of his artistic style. Designed to mark 20 years of collaboration between Daniel Arsham and Emmanuel Perrotin in 2023, “100 Hotel Sketches” notably brings together preliminary studies of works exhibited at Perrotin, both in Paris and New York.

Learn more about the artist

Born in 1980 in Cleveland, Daniel Arsham lives and works in New York. His uchronistic aesthetic revolves around his concept of fictional archaeology. Working in sculpture, architecture, drawing and cinema, he creates and crystallizes ambiguous intermediate spaces or situations, and stages what he calls future relics of the present. They are weathered casts of modern artifacts and contemporary human figures, which he expertly crafts from geological materials such as sand, selenite or volcanic ash so that they appear as if they came from be discovered after having been buried for centuries. Always emblematic, most of the objects he transforms into stone refer to the end of the 20th century or the millennial era, when technological obsolescence accelerated without precedent with the digital dematerialization of our world. As the present, future and past collide poetically in his haunted yet playful visions between romanticism and pop art, Daniel Arsham also experiments with the timelessness of certain symbols and gestures across cultures.
