Le designer

Martine Bedin

Martine Bedin, designer française née en 1957 à Bordeaux, a étudié l'architecture à Paris et découvert l'architecture radicale italienne à Florence grâce à une bourse en 1978. Elle a participé à la fondation du groupe Memphis en 1980 et s'est établie comme architecte et designer à Milan en 1982. Bedin a contribué à de nombreux projets significatifs, notamment l'aménagement de transports et d'espaces publics à Nîmes, ainsi que des intérieurs historiques à Reims et Chambord. Elle a également conçu des produits pour Louis Vuitton et lancé sa propre maison d'édition à Bordeaux en 1991. En 1993, elle a été faite Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres et vit à Rome depuis 2002. Ses œuvres sont exposées dans des musées importants comme le musée des Arts décoratifs à Paris.

La maison

Memphis Milano

Memphis naît à Milan le soir du 11 décembre 1980, chez Ettore Sottsass, entouré notamment de Michele De Lucchi, Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini et Martine Bedin. Le nom vient d'une chanson de Bob Dylan, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, qui passait ce soir-là. La première collection, 55 objets, est présentée le 18 septembre 1981 à la galerie Arc '74, avec les bibliothèques Carlton et Casablanca de Sottsass et la Super Lamp de Martine Bedin. Le groupe se dissout en 1988, et la société Memphis poursuit aujourd'hui l'édition de ces pièces depuis La Morra.
