Stylish, comfortable, and iconic.
The Eames Lounge Chair and its footstool, officially designated as the Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671), were released in 1956. This chair was the first item designed by the couple for mass production.
The Eameses conceived it with the desire to give it "the warm, receptive look of a well-used first-baseman's mitt."
Originally manufactured with a molded, polished rosewood plywood frame upholstered with thick down-filled leather cushions, both pieces mounted on a chrome base, this chair suggests a modern American interpretation of the traditional European club chair.
The Charles & Ray Eames Lounge Chair is a design bestseller, with over 6 million units sold.
This design icon is part of the permanent collection at the MoMA in New York.
There are two official editions: the American edition by Herman Miller and the European edition by Vitra.
The two editions are distinguished by differences in their assembly.
Today, the Lounge Chair is still in production by Vitra and Herman Miller, but it differs from the original model: the rear seat cutout is open, and the attachment hardware for the back and armrests has changed.
