Some light fixtures simply provide illumination, while others define a room. The VL Ring Crown belongs to the latter category: a crown of light designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen, one of the pioneers of Danish functionalism, now reissued by Louis Poulsen.
Vilhelm Lauritzen, functionalism in every detail
Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894-1984) is one of the most important architects in Danish history and the iconic figure of Danish functionalism–he is the man behind the Radiohuset, the original Kastrup Airport, and the Danish Embassy in Washington. His conviction was summed up in one sentence: there is no life without aesthetics. Many of his buildings were conceived as gesamtkunstwerk, total works of art where every last detail–down to the lighting–contributes to the whole. It is in this spirit that he also designed the VL 45 Radiohus pendant.
A crown of light
The Ring Crown lives up to its name: a ring of concentric slats that forms a true crown of light. This geometry is not merely aesthetic–it hides the light source and diffuses a soft, glare-free glow, staying true to the requirement for visual comfort central to Danish design. The result is both graphic and discreet, equally fitting above a table or on a wall.

In the shop
We offer the VL Ring Crown in two formats: the VL Ring Crown pendant, which stands out as a focal point above a table or in an entryway, and the VL Ring Crown wall lamp, which is more intimate, perfect for accenting a corridor or framing a mirror.
How to choose?
The pendant requires a bit of height to reveal its crown; plan to place it above a table or kitchen island. The wall lamp, on the other hand, stands alone beautifully on a wall surface and frees up space. In both cases, the VL Ring Crown naturally complements understated interiors and raw materials.
