Palissade Cantilever Chair by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec

The Palissade Cantilever range takes the symmetrical geometry of the original collection and modifies the base: the frame rests on a continuous sled rather than four legs. The seat is thus supported in a cantilever, with no support beneath it. This has two concrete effects. The silhouette is lighter: the empty space beneath the seat makes it appear as if it is resting on nothing. More importantly, the frame is dynamic: the steel flexes slightly under weight, creating a flexible seat with a spring-like effect that a four-legged base cannot provide. The seat and backrest retain the spaced-out flat slats, which allow rainwater to drain and air to circulate. This version adds two armrests formed as a continuation of the tube and gains twelve centimeters in width compared to the chair, without changing the depth: it slides under the same tables. It is available in powder-coated steel, a baked-on powder paint that forms a hard, opaque layer, and in hot-dip galvanized steel, dipped in a bath of molten zinc: this finish is not painted, it develops a patina, and is the most durable in saline environments.
