Soft Edge 70 stool by Iskos-Berlin

The 70 is the stool of the series: the same molded oak veneer shell, backless, on four straight steel legs. 47.5 cm seat height: the height of a chair. It slides under a table, serves as extra seating, or as a plant stand. Width 37.5 cm.

Oak veneer, and why it is curved

The shell is made of sheets of oak veneer glued and pressed into a mold: this is what is called molded plywood. The process allows for a thin, and therefore lightweight, wall that takes on a continuous curve without edges or joints. This is what gives the series its name: the edge of the seat softens instead of cutting into the thigh.

The lacquer is water-based. Natural oak leaves the grain visible; opaque stains close it off more while keeping the texture in relief.
