HAY describes the AAC 22 as having a solid shell forming "a curved backrest with armrests, for excellent comfort and a soft, unified silhouette," set on a four-legged wooden base which "adds a classic and timeless expression and ensures greater stability." It is the best-selling model in the series.
The shell: recycled polypropylene, what HAY calls "2.0"
The seat and backrest form a single injection-molded shell made from post-consumer plastic waste: this is what the "2.0" in the color names refers to. The material is mass-dyed: a scratch will not reveal a different color underneath, and maintenance is limited to soapy water. On light colors, slight variations in shade are inherent to recycled material.
Oak veneer, and why it is written here
The base of this model is made of oak veneer: a sheet of real wood glued onto a substrate, rather than solid wood. The HAY product sheet states this explicitly (Water-based lacquered Oak veneer). We mention it because the same series includes solid wood models, the AAC 12, 13, 212, and 213, and nothing in the photo makes it possible to distinguish them.
Veneer is not a defect: it provides a more regular grain appearance, withstands changes in humidity better, and makes the piece lighter. However, it is difficult to sand down. The lacquer is water-based, in a natural or black-stained finish.
