The design
The HAY brand was founded in 2002 in Denmark by the couple Rolf & Mette Hay. Inspired by art, architecture, and fashion, the Hay couple wanted to produce designer furniture accessible to as many people as possible, echoing the innovative greatness of Danish design from the 1950s and 1960s. Hay places design at the center of the home and office with simple, functional, and aesthetic products, in collaboration with contemporary artists and designers. In 2018, HAY expanded and developed across the Atlantic by partnering with the American furniture company Herman Miller, whose historical legacy in design has been well-established ever since.
The Slice series is not attributed to any outside designer: HAY signs it with its own name and its product page carries no author credit. This is a common case for this publisher, which calls on independent designers for part of its catalog and designs the rest itself. What makes the piece here is its use: HAY molds it from polyethylene, a hygienic and easy-to-clean material.
