Le designer

Michael Graves

Michael Graves (1934-2015), né à Indianapolis, étudie l'architecture à l'université de Cincinnati puis à Harvard, dont il sort diplômé en 1959. Il enseigne à Princeton de 1962 à 2001. Le Portland Building, achevé en 1982 dans l'Oregon, fait de lui l'une des figures de l'architecture postmoderne. Il dessine aussi des objets du quotidien : son agence, le Michael Graves Design Group, en a conçu plus de deux mille, dont plus de cinq cents pour l'enseigne Target entre 1999 et 2012. Il reçoit la National Medal of Arts en 1999 et la médaille d'or de l'AIA en 2001. Pour Alessi, il crée en 1985 la bouilloire 9093 en acier inoxydable, à sifflet en forme d'oiseau.

La maison

Alessi

Alessi naît en 1921 à Omegna, lorsque Giovanni Alessi et son frère ouvrent un atelier de travail du laiton et du maillechort. Dans les années 1970, la maison confie ses projets à des designers extérieurs comme Ettore Sottsass, Richard Sapper, Achille Castiglioni et Alessandro Mendini. Le projet Tea & Coffee Piazza, en 1983, lui fait rencontrer Aldo Rossi et Michael Graves, dont la bouilloire 9093 de 1985 est la première commande passée par Alessi à un designer américain. Philippe Starck y signe le presse-agrumes Juicy Salif, dont les premiers croquis datent de 1988.
