Le designer

Peter Shire

Peter Shire, né en 1947 à Los Angeles, vit et travaille toujours dans le quartier d'Echo Park. Formé à la céramique au Chouinard Art Institute, il ouvre son atelier en 1972 et présente en 1975 sa première exposition personnelle : théières, vases et carreaux peints aux formes géométriques. À la fin des années 1970, Ettore Sottsass découvre ses pièces et l'invite à Milan rejoindre le groupe Memphis. Il y élargit son travail au métal, au verre et au mobilier, avec la table Brazil en 1981 et le fauteuil asymétrique Bel Air en 1982, aujourd'hui réédité par Memphis Milano. Il a depuis signé plusieurs sculptures publiques à Los Angeles et dans d'autres villes de Californie.

La maison

Memphis Milano

Memphis naît à Milan le soir du 11 décembre 1980, chez Ettore Sottsass, entouré notamment de Michele De Lucchi, Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini et Martine Bedin. Le nom vient d'une chanson de Bob Dylan, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, qui passait ce soir-là. La première collection, 55 objets, est présentée le 18 septembre 1981 à la galerie Arc '74, avec les bibliothèques Carlton et Casablanca de Sottsass et la Super Lamp de Martine Bedin. Le groupe se dissout en 1988, et la société Memphis poursuit aujourd'hui l'édition de ces pièces depuis La Morra.
