Table City by Ettore Sottsass: A tribute to postmodern design
In 1983, Ettore Sottsass, one of the founding members of Memphis, gave birth to the City table. Equipped with a top with an abstract pattern reminiscent of the leopard, it rests on chrome legs. This creation combines the rigor of the form and the boldness of the patterns, in order to create a unique piece.
The Emergence of Memphis Milano
The “Memphis Milano” catalog brings together the emblematic creations of the Memphis collective. These pieces redefined the design landscape of the 80s, but also transformed the creative and commercial standards of that period.
The Revolutionary Movement
Founded in Milan in 1981 under the leadership of Ettore Sottsass, Memphis has united creative minds from around the world, such as Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie Du Pasquier, George J. Sowden, and many others. Delving into artistic extravagance, Memphis departed from the aesthetic conventions of the time, breaking with the conformism of traditional design and the sobriety of Bauhaus. The aesthetic becomes bold, colorful and fanciful, marking a radical shift.
The Radiance of the Revolution
The first Memphis collection shook the design world with its patterns, colors, bold shapes and innovative use of plastic laminate. The Memphis revolution has extended its influence to invest the media and generate enthusiasm, bringing a new dimension to contemporary design.
Signs of Recognition
Memphis creations have been hoisted as symbols of Anti-design and New Design, revealing unlimited creativity freed from industrial and market constraints. At the intersection of design, architecture, art and post-modernism, these exceptional pieces are today coveted by international collectors and honored in the most prestigious museums.
