The Rocking Chair, also called the RAR Armchair (for Rocking Armchair Rod base), was created by the Eameses in 1948, using fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin to create a single-piece shell.
This rocking chair was presented for the first time in 1950 at the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition at the MoMA in New York. It met with great success there and was originally produced by the Herman Miller company until the late 1970s.
Alongside the Herman Miller production based in the United States, Vitra has been producing polypropylene models in Europe since 1972.
The armchair also exists in a version with legs. There are two different bases: the DAR model (chrome-plated aluminum base) and the DAW model (wooden legs).
