The Rocking Chair, also called the RAR Armchair (for Rocking Armchair Rod base), was created by the Eameses in 1948 using glass fiber-reinforced polyester resin to create a single-piece shell.
This rocking chair was first presented in 1950 during the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition at the MoMA in New York. It was a great success and was originally manufactured by the Herman Miller company until the late 1970s.
Alongside the Herman Miller production based in the United States, Vitra has been producing polypropylene models in Europe since 1972.
The armchair also exists in a version with legs. There are two different bases: the DAR model (chrome-plated aluminum base) and the DAW model (wooden legs).
