Designed for the MoMA’s “Low-Cost Furniture Design” competition in New York in 1950, the DSW chair is the result of the Eames couple's research into molding fiberglass, previously reserved for aeronautics. Its one-piece shell, adapted to human anatomy, revolutionized the furniture industry.
A 20th-century icon, the DSW (Dining Side chair Wood) is part of history.
It was mass-produced starting in 1950 in the United States by the manufacturer Herman Miller. This was the beginning of “mass design.”
The first Eames chairs from 1950, distributed by the American company Herman Miller, came from Zenith Plastics in Gardena, California.
After 1953, the manufacturer changed factories several times, but production remained American. In Europe, the rights to the DSW were purchased by Vitra.
Lightweight, versatile, easy to maintain, available in multiple colors, and mass-produced, the Eames DSW chair has conquered interiors all over the world and is now exhibited in prestigious modern art museum collections.
Versatile, the DSW chair is found in offices as well as private homes.
Eames chairs were subsequently developed into numerous models: the RAR rocking chair, the DAW armchair with wooden base, the DAR armchair with Eiffel base, etc.
