Le designer

Gerard Taylor

Gerard Taylor est un designer diplômé de la Glasgow School of Art, qui obtient ensuite un master au Royal College of Art de Londres dans les années 1980. À sa sortie, Ettore Sottsass l'invite à rejoindre son agence milanaise, où il reste cinq ans et participe aux collections Memphis. De retour à Londres, il ouvre son propre studio et travaille pour Habitat, Giroflex ou Selfridges sur des systèmes de bureau, des sièges et des concepts de magasin.

La maison

Memphis Milano

Memphis naît à Milan le soir du 11 décembre 1980, chez Ettore Sottsass, entouré notamment de Michele De Lucchi, Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini et Martine Bedin. Le nom vient d'une chanson de Bob Dylan, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, qui passait ce soir-là. La première collection, 55 objets, est présentée le 18 septembre 1981 à la galerie Arc '74, avec les bibliothèques Carlton et Casablanca de Sottsass et la Super Lamp de Martine Bedin. Le groupe se dissout en 1988, et la société Memphis poursuit aujourd'hui l'édition de ces pièces depuis La Morra.
