The philosophy of Shiro Kuramata

Shiro Kuramata, a designer recognized for his avant-garde concepts, often integrated elements of surprise and charm into his works, asserting that incanto (enchantment) is also an essential function of furniture. His creations demonstrate how a piece of furniture can transcend its simple utility to evoke emotions and stimulate the imagination.

Le designer

Andrea Branzi

Andrea Branzi (1938-2023), né à Florence, est diplômé d'architecture de l'université de Florence en 1966. La même année, il fonde avec Gilberto Corretti, Paolo Deganello et Massimo Morozzi le groupe Archizoom Associati, figure de l'architecture radicale et auteur du projet théorique No-Stop City. Installé à Milan, il participe ensuite au Studio Alchimia, puis au groupe Memphis dans les années 1980. Il dirige pendant dix ans la Domus Academy, première école italienne de design de troisième cycle, fondée en 1982, et enseigne au Politecnico di Milano jusqu'en 2009. Deux fois Compasso d'Oro, en 1979 et 2005, il est représenté au Centre Pompidou, au MoMA et au Victoria and Albert Museum.

La maison

Memphis Milano

Memphis naît à Milan le soir du 11 décembre 1980, chez Ettore Sottsass, entouré notamment de Michele De Lucchi, Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini et Martine Bedin. Le nom vient d'une chanson de Bob Dylan, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, qui passait ce soir-là. La première collection, 55 objets, est présentée le 18 septembre 1981 à la galerie Arc '74, avec les bibliothèques Carlton et Casablanca de Sottsass et la Super Lamp de Martine Bedin. Le groupe se dissout en 1988, et la société Memphis poursuit aujourd'hui l'édition de ces pièces depuis La Morra.
