Le designer

Joe Colombo

Joe Colombo (1930-1971) étudie la peinture à l'Académie de Brera jusqu'en 1949, puis l'architecture au Politecnico di Milano jusqu'en 1954. En 1951, il rejoint le Movimento Nucleare fondé par Sergio Dangelo et Enrico Baj, et peint et sculpte pendant plusieurs années avant de se tourner vers le design. Il ouvre son agence en 1962 et multiplie les expériences : fauteuil Elda en fibre de verre moulée en 1963, chaise Universale pour Kartell, premier siège pour adultes en ABS, sièges modulaires Tube et Multi. Il reçoit le Compasso d'Oro en 1970 et meurt l'année suivante, à 41 ans ; son unité d'habitation totale est présentée au MoMA en 1972. Kartell et Zanotta rééditent plusieurs de ses pièces.

La maison

Kartell

Kartell est fondée en 1949 par Giulio Castelli et fabrique d'abord des accessoires automobiles. La maison fait entrer le plastique dans l'intérieur domestique et rend les objets du quotidien pratiques et colorés, notamment grâce au travail de l'architecte et designer Anna Castelli Ferrieri. En 1988, Claudio Luti, gendre du fondateur, reprend l'entreprise et fait appel à Philippe Starck, auteur de la chaise Louis Ghost, Ron Arad, Antonio Citterio, Patricia Urquiola ou Mario Bellini. Kartell indique avoir été, en 1999, la première entreprise au monde à produire du mobilier en polycarbonate. Son siège est à Noviglio, près de Milan.
