Stylish, comfortable, and iconic.
The Eames Lounge Chair and its footstool, officially designated as the Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671), were first marketed in 1956. This chair was the first item designed by the couple for large-scale production.
The Eameses designed it with the goal of giving it "the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt."
Originally crafted with a molded, polished rosewood plywood frame upholstered with thick down-filled leather cushions, and both pieces mounted on a chrome base, this chair suggests a modern American interpretation of the traditional European club chair.
Charles & Ray Eames' Lounge Chair is a design bestseller, with over 6 million units sold.
This design icon is, in fact, part of the permanent collection at MoMA in New York.
There are two official editions: one American by Herman Miller, and the other European by Vitra.
The two editions are distinguished by differences in assembly.
Today, the Lounge Chair is still in production by Vitra and Herman Miller, but it differs from the original model: the rear seat cutout is open, and the mounting hardware for the backrest and armrests has changed.
