Learn more about this designer

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is a German architect, naturalized American, born in 1886 and died in 1969 in Chicago.
After starting out as an architect, he founded his architectural firm in 1912. During the first part of his career, he created numerous villas, which range from the Prussian style, with the Riehl house, to modernism, with the Pavillon de international exhibition of 1929.
He directed the Bauhaus school from 1930 until its closure in 1933.
The coming to power of the National Socialist Party prevented him from pursuing his career in Germany and he emigrated in 1938 to the United States, to Chicago where he became director of the Illinois Institute of Technology.
In addition to several villa projects, he created his most monumental buildings in the United States, including the 860 and 880 Lake Shore Drive buildings, the Seagram Building and the Klucszinski Federal Building.

Mies van der Rohe's plans and projects are characterized by clear shapes and the intensive use of glass and steel.
His work lays the foundations for the construction of large buildings with glass facades: skyscrapers, often developed as curtain walls.
Inspired by avant-garde architectural movements such as expressionism, constructivism and De Stijl, his constructions made Mies van der Rohe a leading actor in the modern movement of the 20th century.
